Decarboxylation/decarbonylation represents a hydrogen-efficient alternative to hydrotreating for the conversion of lipids to fuel-like hydrocarbons. Inexpensive Ni catalysts that can be regenerated via calcination in air have been developed as an alternative to the costly carbon-supported precious metal formulations commonly used to catalyze this reaction.
