Gold nanoparticles and WO3 were deposited within porous silica to form active methanol transformation catalysts. The gold nanoparticles caused more facile WO3 reduction, which influenced catalyst activity and selectivity. Dehydration of methanol was observed over WO3, while greatly reducing combustion. Oxidation to formaldehyde occurred over gold and WO3 co-doped catalysts.
