This work demonstrates the potential of Mo carbides as replacement for both Ru/C and promoted Mo/Al2O3 sulfide catalysts in 2-stage hydroprocessing of fast pyrolysis bio-oil. Reactor evaluation with real bio-oil and detailed catalyst characterization results suggest that a novel class of bio-oil catalysts could be developed based on Mo carbides.
