We find the rate of hydrogen oxidation over polycrystalline platinum in alkaline electrolytes is dependent on the cation present in the electrolyte solution. We propose a reaction mechanism involving adsorbed hydroxide, which can be promoted by the presence of adsorbed alkali metal cations, and validate using density functional theory.
