Nanoparticles are heterogeneous in nature and their catalytic properties measured at the ensemble level are ensemble-averaged. Single-molecule level measurements provide insight into the behavior of individual nanoparticles and allow the behavior of sub-populations within ensembles to be delineated. Additionally, dynamics within catalytic cycles can be observed at the single-molecule level.
