O-Th-A-12 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Production from Catalytic Transformation of Carbohydrates in a Biphasic System

Phosphated-TiO2 in a biphasic medium of water–THF effectively catalyze the synthesis of HMF from carbohydrates. High yields (> 80%) of HMF were obtained from mono- and di-saccharides, as well as good HMF yield (67%) from depolymerized cellulose. The described reaction system has potential application to lignocellulosic biomass feedstock.
