Bifunctional Cu-Mg-Al catalysts efficiently promote the 1,3-butanediol upgrading by dehydrogenation and dehydration reactions toward valuable oxygenates without supply of H2. Cu-Mg-Al with high copper content are the most promising materials because of their high activity (large number of surface Cu0 sites) and high selectivity toward valuable multifunctional oxygenates like hydroxyketone.
