Lignin model compounds are efficiently oxidized by means of catalytic oxidation with LDH catalysts. This holds the promise that when coupled with a secondary Baeyer-Villiger oxidation step, and subsequent hydrolysis, it should be possible to cleave lignin’s newly generated esters and enol ethers to yield smaller aromatic products.
