A combined DFT and experimental study on the mechanism of glucose to fructose isomerization evidences the importance of cooperativity between Lewis and Brønsted acid sites for sugar activation. The chemocatalysts explored herein operate similarly to enzymatic systems. This study discusses the fundamental requirements for a successful glucose isomerization catalyst.
