Ni based catalysts can be stabilized in aqueous conditions by tuning the reaction conditions (presence of H2, concentration of reactant (ethylene glycol, glycerol) presence of base). The catalysts are stable under basic conditions and can oxidize polyols, anaerobically, to acids while at the same time producing hydrogen.
