Ni based catalysts can be stabilized in aqueous conditions by tuning the reaction conditions (presence of H₂, concentration of reactant (ethylene glycol, glycerol) presence of base). The catalysts are stable under basic conditions and can oxidize polyols, anaerobically, to acids while at the same time producing hydrogen.
