P-Tu-BRC-138 Sugars to HMF to Levulinates with Acid Catalysts

The conversion of sugars to HMF and HMF to acetals and levulinates was studied in methanolic HCl and over modified silica and alumina catalysts, giving the reaction network as a function of reaction conditions. Humin formation could be minimized and acetals maximized for very dilute acids.
