Catalytic deoxygenation of fatty acids facilitates the conversion of lipid biomass to hydrocarbons. Highly dispersed Pd/SiO2 catalysts deactivate rapidly and irreversibly in octanoic acid (OA) deoxygenation due to self-poisoning by strongly adsorbed OA.  Alloying Pd with Au reduces the deactivation rate, consistent with lower CO and OA adsorption energies.
