Mo-V-Te-(Ta,Nb)-O M1 phase catalysts were studied by HAADF-STEM and DFT. Ta was found to reside in site S9 (STEM and DFT), while DFT confirmed Nb location in S9. The Ta and Nb occupancy in S9 apparently plays an important role in controlling reactivity of M1 phases in propane ammoxidation.
