A novel heterogeneous catalyst for the deoxydehydration of glycols to olefins is introduced. The catalyst is prepared by anchoring perrhenate on a carbon support and is characterized by IR and XAFS spectroscopy. Various diols are successfully converted to olefins using H2 or other reducing agents and benzene as the solvent.
