P-W-Wil-15 Activated Mg-Al-La and Mg-Fe-Layered Double Hydroxides as Catalysts for the Synthesis of Isobenzofuran-1(3H)-ones

The synthesis of isobenzofuran-1(3H)-ones (phthalides) from 2-carboxybenzaldehyde and acetophenone using activated Mg-Al-La and Mg-Fe-La layered double hydroxides (LDH) as heterogeneous catalyst is described.  Mixed oxides show less conversion of 2-carboxybenzaldehyde at 240 minutes compared to that of the rehydrated materials.  The materials derived from Mg-Fe-La LDH showed a better performance.
