Nanoscale metal oxides with (111) surfaces possess a novel surface that can be utilized for low temperature methanol decomposition and Lewis base catalysis (ie. pyroloysis oil upgrading).  Additionally, use of these surfaces as supports for nanoparticles of gold indicate very different catalyst/support interactions as compared to the (100) surfaces.
