Guaiacol was selected as a model compound to study the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation of pyrolysis bio-oil. This work investigated various noble metal catalyst(s) along with the operating conditions which maximize oxygen removal while minimizing hydrogen consumption. Ruthenium exhibited optimum hydrodeoxygenation activity. Kinetic measurements are ongoing and will also be presented.
