We have studied the mode of operation of the Al2O3 promoters in industrial Cu/ZnO catalysts for methanol synthesis. Efficient promotion was observed for Cu particles supported on Al-doped ZnO. We present a new structure-function relationship and a report the synthesis of improved Cu/ZnO:Al catalysts with low promoter content.
