Metal oxide layers can be grown on heterogeneous catalysts using atomic layer deposition.  The layers protect the nanoparticles from sintering. Upon heating, pores form creating channels to the metal nanoparticle.  These materials are catalytically active and can be tailored by changing metals, pore sizes, and overcoat materials.
