The hydrogenation of D-maltose to corresponding alcohol in aqueous solution was investigated on SpongeTM metal catalysts. The kinetic data showed that the hydrogenation step on the catalyst surface is rate determining. Catalysts exhibited 95% selectivity to D-maltitol, activity was nearly 45 mmolH2/gcat/h and the catalysts could be reused many times.
