A pilot plant reactor was designed and used to study the deactivation of an CrOx/Al2O3 catalyst during the dehydrogenation of propane. Special UV-Vis probes were inserted in the reactor to track coke formation over time. It was found that coke formation and combustion does not occur homogeneously inside the reactor.
