We combine in situ and ex situ measurements to demonstrate the importance of the nature of catalyst, substrate temperature and precursor pressure in controlling the activity of catalyst for carbon nanotubes synthesis. Atomic resolution videos reveal their nucleation and growth mechanism. Density functional theory is used to explain our obseravtions.
