The grafting of B(C6F5)3 onto silica occurs readily in the presence of a catalytic amount of H2O. The reaction of B(C6F5)3•H2O affords (C6F5)2BOH and C6F5H, where the former reacts with surface hydroxyl groups to give ≡SiOB(C6F5)2 sites capable of activating Cr(CH2C(CH3)3)4 for C2H4 polymerization at ambient temperature.
