We shown that unique tungsten oxide films, composed of molecularly bound (WO3)3 trimers ordered in a (3×3) superstructure, can be prepared on Pt(111) upon deposition at 700 K. Their catalytic properties are illustrated in polymerization reactions of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde at temperatures as low as 70 K.
