A catalytic route for the selective conversion of 2,5-dimethyl furan (DMF) to para-xylene, a key chemical intermediate for polyester production, by cycloaddition with ethylene will be presented. The DMF and ethylene starting materials may be synthesized from carbohydrates thereby providing a route to para-xylene from annually renewable feedstocks.
