The surface chemistries of furfuryl alcohol and furfural have been studied on Pd(111). TPD and DFT calculations are used to map the reaction pathways of these compounds. We find that the “ligand” alcohol and aldehyde groups strongly affect the adsorption and reaction of the furan ring, and vice versa.
