A mechanistic understanding of the growth of colloidal nanoparticles will enable the design of catalysts with controlled size and shape.  Anions are common additives during the synthesis of nanoparticles but their exact role in nanoparticle growth is still unknown, in addition to their influence on nanoparticle surface chemistry and catalysis.
