Freeze drying is introduced to control nanoparticle distribution in supported Co Fischer Tropsch catalysts prepared by impregnation. Cryo-TEM allowed 3D visualization of precursor phases after impregnation and after drying in individual SBA-15 particles. Freeze drying yielded a homogeneous salt distribution, translating into a homogeneous cobalt particle distribution in the catalyst.
