The addition of high-pressure carbon dioxide to high-temperature liquid water is highly beneficial in providing protons for the intramolecular dehydration of polyalcohol compounds and this technique could be extended to other acid-catalyzed reactions, which leads to environmentally benign technologies for conversion of biomass derivatives to useful materials.
