Rhodium nanoparticles dispersed in an imidazolium-based ionic liquid catalyzes the cyclodehydration of citral to produce three cyclic products (p-cymene, p-α-dimethylstyrene and limonene) with greater than 75% selectivity. Interaction between imidazolium cations and metal generates an acidic catalyst. This novel catalytic system is one order of magnitude more active than H2SO4.
