Ru supported on acid-functionalized SBA-15 was studied for the conversion of cellulose into sorbitol. The activity of the catalysts increases with an increase in acidity and Ru controls selectivity. Catalysts are not hydrothermally stable, losing a significant fraction of their surface area, crystallinity, and acidity after exposure to hot water.
