The interaction of acetic acid with a Cu/ZnO/alumina catalyst was investigated under CO2/CO/H2, CO/H2, H2 and N2.  When CO2 is present there is no carbon deposition and the addition of acid to CO/H2 increases methanol yield. Isotopically labelled acid was used to follow both methyl and carbonyl carbon atoms.
