Grafting of CrR3 (R is CH(SiCH3)3) onto partially dehydroxylated silica generates a supported organometallic complex which initiates ethylene polymerization at low pressure and temperature, modeling the active sites of the widely-used yet little-understood Phillips catalyst. The sites were characterized spectroscopically, analytically, and via their stoichiometric reactivity towards olefins.
