Exploiting the solvation of lignocellulosic biomass in ionic liquid media enables production of HMF from sugarcane bagasse in one-pot.  ~70 mol% HMF was achieved by a combination of Brønsted and Lewis acid catalyzed cellulose hydrolysis to glucose and dehydraton of glucose to HMF.
