A newly-discovered material called Swellable Organically-Modified Silica (SOMS), which is highly hydrophobic and absorptive, was investigated for its role as a catalyst support for hydrodechlorination of trichloroethylene. Pd metals impregnated on SOMS were protected by the hydrophobicity of the support and promoted the resistance of the catalysts to sulfide groups.
