Here we investigate the role of surface acyl species on the mechanism of ketonization of acetic acid over zeolites, a reaction which is critical to the upgrading of biomass pyrolysis oils. We report a detailed Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model and isotope labaling experiments to contrast the mechanism with that over TiO₂.
