The influence of various reaction mixtures on heteropoly acid catalysts have been studied with Raman spectroscopy. Among the formation of a band related to the vanadyl species, a novel band at 187 cm^-1 evolved upon reductive treatment. The effects of these spectral features on the catalysts performance will be discussed.
