The stability of oxide-supported metal catalysts under hydrothermal conditions is significantly improved using a facile, inexpensive carbon overcoating approach to deposit monolayer coverage of carbon. This approach is demonstrated in an aqueous-phase reaction, such as hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural to furfuryl alcohol.
