A method has been developed to produce meso- and/or macropores AC from petroleum coke by a combination of chemical (KOH, NaOH) and physical (steam, CO₂) activation. These AC could be use as hydrotreating catalyst support where upgrading involves the hydroconversion of larger molecules for access to the active sites.
