A method has been developed to produce meso- and/or macropores AC from petroleum coke by a combination of chemical (KOH, NaOH) and physical (steam, CO2) activation. These AC could be use as hydrotreating catalyst support where upgrading involves the hydroconversion of larger molecules for access to the active sites.
