Riding on the Surface States Highway: The Nature and Role of Surface States in Photo-Assisted Water Splitting on Hematite

Hematite is an extensively investigated semiconductor for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here a model describing how the onset potential on hematite depend on the pH of the electrolyte is put-forth, which is confirmed by measurements. These results provide a framework for a deeper understanding of the OER.
