Mo carbide nanoparticles supported on ZSM-5 zeolites were evaluated with experimental and computational methods. Methane activation is predicted to proceed over a Mo-C pair of atoms serving as a single active site. The obtained reaction mechanism information provides strategies for developing improved catalyst formulations and optimization of reaction conditions.
