P-Tu-B-215 Production of 1,3-Butadiene from 2,3-Butanediol Using Cesium Oxide Supported Silica Catalyst

We demonstrate a heterogeneous catalytic process for the production of 1,3-butadiene from 2,3-butanediol, which is enabled by a novel type of dehydration that yields 2,3-epoxybutane from 2,3-butanediol (dehydrative epoxidation). The proposed catalytic process is composed of 3 steps: Dehydrative epoxidation, isomerization, and acid catalyzed dehydration.
