We delineate the mechanism of fructose dehydration in DMSO and DMSO/H₂O mixtures, the profound effect of DMSO on dehydration kinetics by combining first-principles simulations, and kinetic experiments. Mechanistic insights could guide the rational selection of co-solvents a crucial step for the development of efficient biomass valorization processes.
