Diels Alder cycloaddition of dimethylfuran and ethylene to produce p-xylene was studied with different types of solid acid catalysts to investigate the structure-activity relationships. The p-xylene yield was highest with a silica-alumina aerogel catalyst with Si/Al = 1 and was a function of the Bronsted acid site concentrations of the catalysts.
