Acetic acid was produced from methane via methane oxidation and carbonylation reactions over copper exchanged mordenite and ZSM-5.  Methoxy species active for carbonylation migrate from the copper methane oxidation active sites to Bronsted acid sites in eight-membered ring side pockets by hydrolysis with water adsorbed to spectator Cu2+ ions.
