Well-defined supported Al2O3/SiO2 catalysts were employed for catalytic biomass pyrolysis to determine correlations between specific value-added chemicals, acid site nature, and surface AlOx active site coordination. Operando molecular spectroscopy experiments with these catalysts were able to simultaneously characterize the catalyst and reaction intermediates and track the evolution of 40+ major products.
