This contribution reports the relevance of catalyst surface architecture for selective one-step transformation of pentoses to furfuryl alcohol. Multifunctional catalysts bearing metal and acid sites lead to more efficient catalyst once adjacent dual sites are afforded. The vicinity of surface sites allows their interplay in the dehydration and hydrogenation reaction steps.
