We have succeeded in converting cellulose and hemicellulose in the wood chips into sugar alcohols with 94% conversion and 62% yield by supported platinum catalysts. Then, we have also succeeded in the intramolecular dehydration of mannitol and sorbitol in high-temperature liquid water without adding any hazardous acid catalysts.
