Development of Pt Monolayer Electrocatalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction in PEM Fuel Cells

Motivated by density functional theory calculations, we have developed Pt monolayer catalysts with a core-shell structure that exhibit superior electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction, the major source of efficiency loss in low-temperature fuel cells.  Some of these materials outperform standard Pt/C fuel cell catalysts.
