In situ X-ray and IR on K-Cu/Zn/Al and K-Cu/Mn/Al catalysts, active in CO hydrogenation to higher alcohols, revealed that metallic Cu is in close interaction with Zn/Mn. Mn doping increases the electron density of Cu, leading to stronger back-bonding of CO on Cu sites and higher selectivity to higher alcohols.
